GRADES 8–9 · THE FOUNDATION

Grade 8 and 9 EMS accounting help

Your first accounting concepts can feel like a new language. Make sense of what happens to the money first, then work on the entries and calculations.

Learn each term with an example.

Keep a short glossary for assets, liabilities, owner’s equity, income and expenses. Write each term in your own words and add a simple example. A calculator owned by a business can be an asset; money the business owes a supplier is a liability. The example helps you think beyond a memorised definition.

Follow one transaction at a time.

Read the whole transaction before writing. Ask who pays, who receives and why the payment happens. An owner’s contribution is different from sales income, for example, even though the business receives money in both cases.

  • Underline the amount and date.
  • Name the accounts involved before calculating.
  • Explain aloud why you chose your answer.

Keep practice short and regular.

Work through a few transactions without looking at the answers. Mark them afterwards and write one sentence about each mistake. If the same mistake keeps appearing, return to the concept before doing more calculations. Tell me on the form whether you are in grade 8 or 9 and which part of EMS accounting feels difficult.

Questions about this grade

Does the support cover every part of EMS?

The focus is the accounting component of EMS in grades 8–9. This is not an offering for all the economics and entrepreneurship content in the subject. Name the specific accounting topic the learner needs help with when registering interest.

Where should I start if transactions confuse me?

Read the whole transaction and identify what happens: who pays, who receives and why. Write down the accounts involved before entering amounts. Work with one simple example and explain your reasoning aloud; this shows which concept needs more attention.

How do I choose between grade 8 and grade 9 on the form?

The form has a separate option for each grade. When starting from this page, check the preselected grade and change it to grade 9 if needed. Use the message field to explain which work the learner finds difficult.
